“It's a common belief that spinning a bullet excessively fast will result in it maintaining a nose high orientation on the downrange half of the trajectory, thereby increasing drag.

This is simply false.

The very definition of stability is that the projectile will align its axis with the oncoming airflow like a weather vane. Greater stability just means more perfect alignment.

The myth comes from an old problem with high angle artillery fire where shells weighing many hundreds of pounds get launched at extremely high angles into the thin air at high altitude. In this configuration, the shells can sometimes fail to trace through the sharp angle at the apex of the trajectory and instead fall to the ground base first, short of the intended target, usually failing to fuse on impact.

However, small arms bullets weighing thousands of times less, fired at relatively small angles to the line of sight and remaining in the lower atmosphere, are not presented with that same challenge.

Small arms bullets fired from modern rifles even at the fastest twist rates, will trace the trajectory with their axis. Meaning the axis will point up as the bullet is arcing up to the top of its trajectory, and then the axis will tilt down as the bullet falls back down to the line of sight on the target. This tracing only gets more precise the faster the bullet is spinning.”

My 0.02..
